Influences on Science Careers

The "Influences on Science Careers" study, which I am conducting with Anne Lincoln of Southern Methodist University, looks at which factors influence the decision to go into science as a career. We conducted an online survey of men and women who work in the 20 top graduate programs in physics and biology, including graduate students, postdocs, and professors. We have also completed 150 of 200 life history interviews with a sample of the respondents. Once completed, the study will illuminate the perceptions both men and women have about the educational experiences that factored into their decision to pursue an academic career in the sciences.

The research is supported by a grant from the GSE division of the National Science Foundation.
